Church Events

Ongoing - Clothes Closet at North United Methodist Church, 44th and Fremont, from 9 a.m.-noon the first three Saturdays of each month and the first Monday each month from 6-8 p.m. with free bag lunch from Mobile Loaves and Fishes. One Saturday per month dental checks, blood pressure readings, vision screening and medication checks available. Donations accepted when open or see if there is some clothing you may need. If unable to get to NUMC during open times, call the church at 612-522-4497. 

Ongoing third Sundays - Breakfast and a Bag. The Joint Ministries of Evangelist Temple, Brooklyn Center Hispanic Seventh Day Adventist and Gethsemane Lutheran host a free community breakfast from 8-10 a.m. at Gethsemane Lutheran Church on 47th and Colfax. When you are finished with breakfast and coffee you are welcome to take a bag of groceries home with you.

Ongoing Wednesdays - New Directions Youth Ministry free youth club with personal development activities, St. Olaf Lutheran Church, 2901 Emerson, 6:30-8:30 pm. For 7-12 grade students.  Other activities include summer camp, members choice activities, young neighbors service, fundraising and more. Transportation is available for North Minneapolis residents. Ongoing, 9/12-14 - Fall Rummage Sale, the Parish Community of St. Bridget’s-St. Austin Campus, 4051 Thomas. 9/12 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; 9/13, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; 9/14, 8 a.m. to noon. Sat. is bag day, $3 a bag, two for $5

Thursday, 9/26 - North united Methodist Church’s Annual Community Dinner/Smorgasbord, 5-7 p.m.  Tickets: $9 adults, $4 for children age 5-11, children under 5 are free. 44th and Fremont Aves., handicapped accessible.

Saturday, 10/5 - Salem Lutheran Church, 4150 Dupont, Garage/Rummage Sale, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sale includes furniture, household items, kitchen ware, miscellaneous items (no clothing). All are welcome! Info: 612-521-3644.

Ongoing Saturdays – Family Storytime. Webber Library, 11-11:30 a.m. For children age 2 and up. Share books, stories, rhymes, music, and movement with your children.

Tuesdays, 7/9 and 7/23 – Job Search Assistance. Webber Library, 1- 3 p.m. Are you seeking new employment or re-entering the workforce? Do you need help looking for a job, filling out applications or writing your résumé? Stop in for free one-to-one assistance with a job search representative.

Tuesday, 7/16 – Meet Your Neighborhood Firefighters. Webber Library, 2-4:30 p.m. Learn about fire safety, fire prevention, burn prevention and more with Minneapolis firefighters. Also, get hands-on experience with the Minneapolis Fire Department’s “safe escape house” and enjoy a visit from a fire truck!

Tuesday, 7/23 – Mini Magnets. Webber Library, 2-2:30 p.m. What makes a magnet attract or repel another magnet? Learn the science behind magnets through experiments, games and demonstrations from a Bakken Museum educator.

Thursday, 7/25 – Brodini Comedy Magic Show. Webber Community Building 4400 Dupont Ave. North, 2:30 p.m. Magician Graylyn Morris will raise spirits and test kids’ powers of concentration as he manipulates ropes, scarves, balls and other magician’s props in a perplexing “now-you-see-it, now-you-don’t” performance!

Tuesday, 7/30 – My Pet Needs to Know. Webber Library, 2-3 p.m. Just like you have needs, so do your pets. Your pet’s needs are also similar to yours. Working in small groups and using a variety of pet care items, learn the 10 basic needs that all pets share. Pets need to know they are loved; providing for their needs demonstrates that love.

Parks

Ongoing - Loppet Adventure Camp - Mountain biking, roller-skiing, canoeing, capture-the-flag, orienteering, Ultimate Frisbee and more! Loppet Foundation runs summer camps for ages 9-13 for youth to experience non-stop summer fun in Wirth Park. Camps run June-August. loppet.org  or rykken@loppet.org.
Sunday, 7/7 - Free Family Fun Day: Snakes, 1-3 p.m., at Kroening Interpretive Center, North Mississippi Regional Park. Discover the unique adaptations that snakes have, see what a snake feels like and learn to hold one. Free, open to all ages.
Saturday, 7/13 - Wild Edibles, 10 a.m.-noon, at Kroening Interpretive Center, North Mississippi Regional Park. We all know that our food comes from out there … somewhere. Ever wonder if there is food to eat in your very own backyard? Your neighborhood? Well, there is! Come and learn about the food you can find here at Kroening Interpretive Center.  Take a hike and sample things as we go, and then harvest some garlic mustard to make garlic mustard pesto. Cost $5, reservations required, call 763-559-6700. This program is for ages 15+.
Saturday, 8/10 - Truck Extravaganza, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Folwell Park. Trucks - lots and lots of trucks to explore; play - toy truck area; dig for trucks; prizes - a “honk off” and raffle every hour; free lunch and beach ball dump!
