A musical treat for music scholarships

Camden Music School and Our Neighborhood Works (ONW) have created a delicious musical treat for your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and anyone who enjoys great music in support of a good cause. It’s “As Much Fun As You Can Have With Your Ears…Two!” - the second annual FUNdraiser for Camden Music School scholarships on Tuesday, February 6.

Ingredients of this tasty event include: A magical night of music presented by the incomparable Prudence Johnson on vocals, Dan Chouinard on keyboard and accordion, and Gary Rue on guitar and vocals; scrumptious hors d’oeuvres catered by Rix and Papa’s Pizza and Pasta; a hip venue - the newly renovated Ritz Theater at 345 13th Avenue NE, Minneapolis; and camaraderie - meet, mingle and munch at 6:30 p.m. followed by the concert at 8 p.m. Casual, comfortable, cool.

Prudence Johnson’s career has taken her from honky-tonks to Carnegie Hall, from the theater stage to the Silver Screen, from the Midwest to the Middle East. She is a regular guest on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion, broadcast on National Public Radio stations across the country, and appears as one of the “regulars” in Robert Altman’s 2006 A Prairie Home Companion movie. Her film credits also include Robert Redford’s A River Runs Through It in a role she was born to play—a singer!

Dan Chouinard performs, records and tours with many artists, among them Peter Ostroushko, Neal and Leandra, Maria Jette and Ann Reed. He’s a frequent musical guest on Minnesota Public Radio, both as a musician and storyteller.  He’s performed on A Prairie Home Companion and was host of Cafe Europa, a musical memoir of a summer’s travels in Europe with bicycle, tent and accordion, and Mambo Italiano a musical exploration of the Italian roots of American popular song.

Primarily a composer, Gary Rue has over 1000 songs in his personal catalogue.  He also has 56 theater musicals to his credit and is composer-in-residence at SteppingStone Theater for Youth Development in St. Paul. Gary creates music for radio, television and film in addition to his work as a guitarist, vocalist, pianist, touring musician, instructor and keyboard programmer.

To experience this musical treat, order your tickets now! $35 for adults, $20 for students 18 and under – fully tax deductible. Donations to the scholarship fund are also accepted. Order at www.camdenmusicschool.com or 1-800-838-3006.

Proceeds from this event go toward scholarships for students attending Camden Music School. Since the spring of 2006 ONW has awarded 47 music scholarships to deserving students, bringing the joy of music to many families and students of all ages. Since 1997 ONW has been working on and sponsoring projects that promote a strong Northside Minneapolis, including Smoke Free Homes, Holiday on 44th, The Workhouse Theatre and Camden Music School, among others
