Great Streets Concerts — live at the Historic Capri Theater
By: Jeanne Fish 12/01/2009
On Thursday, December 3 The Northside Art's Collective (NSAC) presents Big Surf with Al's Rockabilly Quartet for an evening of surf rock and rockabilly at the Historic Capri Theater.
Big Surf is the zany surf band fronted by Phil Belknap of NoMI, playing twangy instrumental tunes that merge the west coast beach sounds of the 1960s with lively world music influences. Big Surf is the regular host of "Surf Night" at the Hexagon Bar the first Friday of each month, and enjoys airplay worldwide. Opening the night is Al's Rockabilly Quartet, featuring the fabulous guitar work and tasteful humor of Al Subola - also the axeman for the Vibro Champs. ARQ plays a high octane array of original music with Western Swing, honky tonk and surf.
On December 12 is a special Saturday Great Streets Concert featuring Felonious Bosch with the Greg Herriges Trio for an evening of multi-cultural world music. Felonious Bosch is the cross-pollination of members of Boiled in Lead, Working Stiffs and The Bourbones, that includes NoMI multi-instrumentalist and composer Scott Nieman. Greg Herriges plays an eclectic mix of original and traditional world ("whirled") music on guitar, voice and bouzouki, putting new spins on everything from Turkish folk and Bollywood film music to Japanese koto tunes and surf-rock. Greg is also the author of several Hal Leonard world music guitar books.
Doors open at 7 p.m. with showtime at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 available via PayPal at nacarts.org, and at the NAC office, 1011 West Broadway. $8 with your NAC or NEEMA membership card and $5 for college students with current ID at the door. The Historic Capri Theater is located at 2027 West Broadway; ample parking available.
The December concerts will be the sixth and seventh of the 12 part "Great Streets Concert Series" held at the Capri, sponsored through a Great Streets grant from the City of Minneapolis' Department of Community Planning and Economic Development. Each show will be digitally recorded and released as part of the "Live at the Capri" CD series. These releases document the Northside music scene and will be available at subsequent shows, online at nacarts.org, and directly from the artists. Info at info@nacarts.org or 612-767-2141.
