Folwell resident Jen Kotas is a realtor who just joined CBA. Originally from Puyallup, Washington she moved to the Midwest when she graduated high school. She loves the culture, the weather and the seasons. In 2006 she bought her first property in Minneapolis. Recently she moved to the Northside with her husband. They instantly fell in love with their home and the sense of community here. Jen spends most of her free time in the garden with her two wonderful dogs. In order to get closer to the community she joined the Camden Business Association, and is getting a strong neighborhood partnership. Are you buying or selling in Camden? Contact Jennifer Kotas, 763-607-3226, jenkotas.com or jlkotas@cbburnet.com.

UMAMI by Travail is Minnesota’s first extended, full-service pop-up restaurant on West Broadway. The Asian comfort food pop-up (short term restaurant) will seat 45. With the assistance of a City of Minneapolis Great Streets Business District Support grant, the West Broadway Coalition is launching a new initiative to highlight the assets and opportunities along West Broadway. One aspect is the implementation of retail and gallery pop-up events as a strategy for highlighting the potential of vacant spaces. Travail restaurateurs Bob Gerken, Mike Brown, Kale Thorne and James Winberg are enthusiastic about every aspect of this project. Travail Kitchen and Amusements first opened in 2010 at 4124 West Broadway. UMAMI by Travail has come to fruition on West Broadway because the Travail chefs saw an opportunity in North Minneapolis. According to the Minneapolis Department of Community Planning and Economic Development, there is $9.8 million in full service restaurant retail leakage in the West Broadway area annually. Diners can make reservations online via Tempo Tickets. Wine and beer are available to accompany the tasting menu culinary experience. There will also be an a la carte takeout menu. UMAMI by Travail, Wednesdays-Sundays, 5-10 p.m., 904 West Broadway. Contact: megan@travailkitchen.com, 651-335-6328 or facebook.com/ Travailkitchen.

Hennepin County offers grants to businesses to improve recycling. The business sector generates more than half of the total waste in Hennepin County, and nearly two-thirds of waste created at businesses is recyclable. Helping businesses improve their recycling is an important strategy toward meeting the county’s goal of recycling at least half of the waste generated in the county by 2015. Recycling grants are now available for up to $50,000 for businesses to start or improve programs to divert recyclables and organics (food and non-recyclable paper) from the trash. Most businesses and non-profits—from large office buildings to churches, restaurants and apartment buildings—are eligible to apply. These grants can help with the purchase of recycling containers, equipment, hauling services and minor improvements to loading docks and waste enclosures. Info: hennepin.us/businessrecycling or 612-543-1316.
