Hmong New Year celebration joins tradition and community

Parking spots were hard to find near 34th and Penn on November 15 when the Hmong International Academy and Lucy Laney at Cleveland Park schools hosted a Family Night and Hmong New Year Celebration. More than 600 people enjoyed the music of the North High School Jazz Band and performances by Hmong students in traditional costumes. The staff from both schools served both traditional turkey dinners and traditional Hmong foods. The turkeys were purchased and donated by the schools’ teachers. A handful of families also won drawings for Thanksgiving dinner fixings of a turkey, stuffing, cranberries etc. The Assistance League of Minneapolis and St. Paul provided uniforms for 156 families of Lucy Laney at Cleveland Park School. Pictured are two (of a dozen) Hi-5 girls performing a Thai song at the event. Photo by Randy Klauk.
