Loring School Garden honored
On February 4 Loring School was among 17 award winners recognized from across the state by the Minnesota State Horticultural Society for outstanding contributions to horticulture and greening efforts. Loring received the Minnesota Recreation and Parks Association Award, for excellence in contributing to community livability. After removal of two portable classroom buildings on the south side of Loring Elementary School, large empty spaces were left in front of the school. The Victory Neighborhood Association, Loring Elementary School, and neighbors joined together to create a beautiful community garden. The new landscape visually ties the school to the community. It includes a disease resistant elm tree, a butterfly garden used in science classes, and a vegetable garden which has contributed produce to an after-school cooking class and community dinners. This remarkable project has engaged businesses and many families who have no students at the school but are committed to pride and beauty in their community. Pictured above are Loring students at their prize-winning garden last year.
