Heritage Day celebrates Camden’s history with a lot of fun

The Three River Parks District, Lind Bohanon Neighborhood Association and community partners invite everyone to attend the 4th Annual Heritage Day event at Carl Kroening Interpretive Center, Saturday, September 27 from 1-5 p.m.

This year nationally recognized musician and former "Singing Ranger" of the National Parks, Charlie McGuire will be the featured music! McGuire was a staple on Prairie Home Companion, and has over 800 songs and seven albums to his credit. His songs have been featured on Prairie Home Companion and the CBS Evening News, Car Talk, Hometime, As It Happens, and other nationally broadcast programs.

Camden's very own and celebrated Workhouse Theatre Company anchors the day's events. This talented company creates and brings to life the rich history about the local area and the Mississippi River in their original interactive family plays at the outdoor Haybale Theatre. Art exhibits featuring local artists and local historians from the Mississippi Courts Historical Society, Camden Historical Society and the Brooklyn Historical Society will all help celebrate our community's rich history.

Charlotte A. Black Elk once said, "Remember your history. To forget is not to belong." The Mississippi River has provided our community a rich source of commerce and travel over the years. Swedes, Germans, Pols, Czechs, African Americans and many more came from abroad and other parts of the country to call our part of Minneapolis home.

Camden was the lumbering capital of the world at one time, which made all the shingle, brick and home building trades a booming business for our community. It might not look it now, but at one time North Minneapolis neighborhoods were rows upon rows of rich farmland, peat bogs, ponds and creeks, and a retreat for the wealthy "in the country." Lind Bohanon was even the headquarters to the world renowned Kinnard-Haines Tractor Manufacturing Company.

This year Heritage Day has new games and activities planned, like building a log home, walking on homemade stilts, log sawing, cidering, hayrides, and other activities and crafts for all ages. Everyone is invited! Admission is $5 per person (children under 3 free), includes picnic lunch (hot dog, chips, beverage) and two shows. Hurry and pre-register at 763-694-7694!
