Correction on Webber pool
By: Joe Mullery State House Representative 09/01/2013
I want to correct one point in my August letter to the editor regarding the Webber pool. It doesn’t affect the purpose of the letter. The letter was to support the efforts of the Park Board, State and hopefully the County in constructing a good pool for our community; and the fact that there should be public money from city, regional and state taxes used in the construction because other more affluent communities receive such funds for their local amenities.
I stated that the Webber pool was built in the 1930s. I had always heard that it was a WPA project and I saw WPA plaques around the pool when I was young. I now realize the pool was originally built around 1910 with money from the Webber family (the grandson of the John Deere tractor company founder). In the 1930s the WPA built a number of recreational facilities around the pool.
