Trouble buying a home
By: Jerry Johnson 06/01/2008
The home next door to me was offered for sale as a foreclosed property. My daughter, who is a full-time college student and works full-time at one of our nation’s largest health-care facilities, made an offer and the real estate company accepted her offer in January. They scheduled a closing after numerous delays, but then they told us there were still outstanding paperwork issues and we couldn’t get keys to the property until early April. My daughter extended the lease on her apartment to April 30. Now they are telling us two or three more months, with no guarantee that this closing will happen. She is now forced to move in with me because most apartments require a six or 12 month lease agreement.
My neighbors were so excited about someone finally moving in and fixing up this charming little house. I have made so many phone calls that I’m blue in the face. I keep getting steered from one agency to another, and no one has solutions. At this time we have no assurance if my daughter will even get this home.
Now I hear that a group of investors has purchased hundreds of Northside properties. It was easy for them. And this is why our neighborhoods are in the mess they’re in...greed. I thought the City wanted to encourage home ownership. So I’m asking our elected officials, “Can you help us?” Let’s see some results.
