Wagging his tail again for Wi-Fi
By: Jerry Johnson 04/01/2008
I submitted an editorial regarding my enthusiasm for Minneapolis Wi-Fi Internet service for the Camden News February issue, and since then I test-drove the system and can only report that I am so impressed and excited about its current performance that it brings tears to my eyes. One reader responded in the March Camden News regarding my enthusiasm and injected physics and laws of nature....cars smashing down telephone poles for example and other possible human errors.
These can’t be predicted. As the service becomes more “populated” there is, perhaps, a potential of degraded service. Historically people were critical of the skyway and the light-rail systems as well. I dare anyone to suggest that those items failed or weren’t successful.
We are not talking about computer high speed access for $600 a year as most providers charge — we are talking $170 a year — are you sitting down? If you pre-pay for a year’s service you save $70 a year, so the total is only $170 per year versus $240 a year. And I get a free roaming package — I’ve already used it with my laptop and it works “like mint” — anywhere in the city. Can you believe it? For $14.95 a month! There is no circuitry required in my home to make it work. And of course, you can have multiple computers in the house and not be charged for additional service — just attach a router and multiple computers can communicate to the wireless modem — that’s the end users responsibility to configure his/her home as with any provider you are with.
I’m sold. This is an affordable solution to what I’ve experienced in the past and it works. I am not a sales rep for the city or a representative of USI Wireless, but perhaps I should apply in sales - I’m that enthused about my current service. I just love it.
